the great purge that moving is… or, a little bit more about me

i’ve been swamped with packing…  sorting, throwing, selling, piles, boxes… making tons of decisions on what to keep and what to let go.  looking around at all these “things” that are an integrated part of my life.  that have been attained and have journeyed with me the past few years.  one of the main things i’ve been sorting through is 10 years worth of photos.  it’s the photos that i have the hardest time letting go of i think… in part because of the value i place on photography in general… and then also because i like seeing the timeline of my own journey with photography and how far i’ve come since i started taking photos at 20 years old.  i also realized this week that my passport’s about to expire, and being the traveler that i am, got on it to get it renewed stat…  but before i sent off my old one for a new one, i flipped through and gave some thought to all of the places i’ve been over the last decade.  so i decided to do a little post featuring one of my passport stamps or visa’s and then a photo or two from that place… some are newer photos taken with my 5D and 85mm 1.2 lens… other are scanned film from my first SLR, the canon rebel 2000.  i’ve been incredibly blessed to have been able to see quite a lot of the world as some of these pictures will show…  and in no particular order… let’s begin…

i stopped for a night in the united arab emirates (UAE) on my way to india two years ago…  dubai is a strange strange place and i was there during ramadan which made it even stranger and made me scared to eat even an apple during daylight hours!  But the blue sticker is from turkey.  a gorgeous country i’ve been able to visit 4 times since 2006.  i love it there.  i can highly recommend some incredible food and an amazing turkish bath house in istanbul.

in 2000 i got this amazing chance to head to south africa for three months.  i spent a fair amount of time volunteering in schools and townships…

and got in plenty of time to be a tourist and see things like table mountain, robben island, and the

Cape of Good Hope (or southern most tip of africa) seen here…2000 also took me to the islands of thailand for some serious sunburning and vacationing!

2001 landed me in the little town of

altensteig, germany. and funny enough, i can’t find a single photo of the entire year i lived there…

2006 took me on a three week trip around europe.  my dad met up with me and we did france, italy, greece, and at the last minute spontaneously bought tickets to the pyramids!  an experience i’ll always relish and never forget… note all that dust on the lens…

2007 bought me to india.  love that place, can’t wait to get back there…

2008 landed me right smack in the middle of

the omo river valley, ethiopia.  that was my wildest trip to date… i kissed a crocodile, killed a goat for dinner, took hundreds of photos, and loved every minute of it…

this is my saddest visa cause it never got used…  that trip to india struck my travel mate and i with

dengue feaver and after our weeklong stay in a bangkok hospital we nixed the remainder of our trip and took our sick selves home. vietnam is one of the top places on my list right now…

brazil… probably the place i’d most love to live.  it was the sweetest surprise, because i’d never had a huge desire to get there… and to my shock completely fell head over heels in love with the place… the people… the food… the weather… the music… the beaches… i could go on and on and on…  get yourself there.  (apparently the world cup and the olympics know what’s up…) enough said.

i love the world.  and exploring it is pretty much my favorite thing ever.  capturing it is my second.  there’s no where i won’t go.

xoxo,

brooke
